Abstract

This research aimed to determine the extent to which the use of the Wattpad application affect the reading skill of the eighth-grade students at SMPN 6 Pariaman. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasiexperimental design. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students of SMPN 6 Pariaman, and the sample consisted of one experimental class and one control class selected by using cluster rendom sampling. The experimental class was taught by using the Wattpad application, while the control class was taught by using conventional teaching media. The research instrument was a reading test administered as a post-test. The data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and the Mann–Whitney U Test. The results of the normality test indicated that the post-test data were not normally distributed. Therefore, the Mann–Whitney U Test was used to test the research hypothesis. The result showed that the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.007, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05 (0.007 < 0.05). Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0)was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1)was accepted. The effect size was also calculated (r = 0.38), indicating a medium-to-large practical effect. It can be concluded that there was a significant and fairly substantial effect of using the Wattpad application on the reading skill of the eighth-grade students at SMPN 6 Pariaman. The use of the Wattpad application contributed positively to improving students' reading skill and can be considered an effective learning medium in English reading instruction.
