Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the strategies used by an English teacher in teaching speaking to seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Solok. This study used a qualitative research method. The subject of this study was one English teacher with one class of seventh-grade students. The research instruments were observation, interview, and document analysis (RPP). The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the observation, interview, and document analysis showed that the teacher used several strategies in teaching speaking, namely discussion, communication games, acting from script, and prepared talks and presentations. These strategies were applied through various classroom activities such as pair work, group discussion, dialogue practice, and student presentations, which helped students participate more actively and practice speaking in the classroom. In conclusion, the strategies were generally effective, but their success depends on teacher guidance and students’ characteristics. Keywords: Teaching Speaking, Teaching Strategies, Speaking Skills
