Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of using a Monopoly game on students’ speaking skill in teaching procedure text at class IX of MTsN 1 South Solok. The research employed a pre-experimental design with one-group pre-test–post-test. The population consisted of all ninth-grade students of MTsN 1 South Solok in the 2025/2026 academic year. The sample was selected using cluster random sampling, and class IX.1 was chosen as the experimental class. The data were collected through a speaking pre-test and post-test and analyzed using a normality test and paired sample t-test. The result showed that the students’ mean score increased from 34.46 in the pre-test to 49.18 in the post-test. The significance value was 0.000, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05. This indicates that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. In conclusion, the Monopoly game was effective in teaching students’ speaking skill in teaching procedure text at class IX. of MTsN 1 South Solok. The improvement was seen in pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Keywords: Monopoly game, Speaking skill, Procedure text.
