Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of the Team Games Tournament (TGT) technique on students’ speaking skills and to determine whether there is a significant difference between students taught using the TGT technique and those taught using conventional teaching methods at SMAN 17 Padang. Speaking is considered one of the most important skills in learning English because it enables students to communicate ideas, opinions, and information effectively. However, many students still face difficulties in speaking, such as lack of confidence, limited vocabulary, and fear of making mistakes. Therefore, an interactive and cooperative learning technique like TGT is expected to improve students’ motivation and participation in speaking activities. This research applied a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. The participants consisted of seventy-three tenth-grade students who were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught using the TGT technique, while the control group received instruction through conventional teaching methods. Descriptive text was used as the teaching material during the treatment process. Data were collected through speaking tests administered as post-tests to measure students’ speaking achievement after the implementation of the treatment. The collected data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test through SPSS version 20 for Windows. The result showed that the significance value was lower than 0.05 (p = 0.039), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. The findings suggest that the TGT technique significantly improves students’ speaking skills and promotes active participation, collaboration, and confidence in speaking activities.
