Abstract

This research investigates the Effect of Nearpod as an interactive learning medium in enhancing eighth-grade students’ reading comprehension of Greeting Card Material at SMPN 10 Padang. A quasi-experimental method with a posttest-only control group design was employed. The sample consisted of 62 students divided equally into two classes: VIII.9 as the experimental group and VIII.10 as the control group. The experimental group received instruction using Nearpod-based multimedia lessons, while the control group was taught using conventional teaching methods. Data were collected through a 20-item multiple-choice posttest measuring five aspects of reading comprehension: main idea, reference, inference, detailed information, and vocabulary. The results showed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean posttest score (M = 69.19) than the control group (M = 58.55). The normality test indicated that the posttest data of the control group were normally distributed (Sig. = 0.560), whereas the posttest data of the experimental group were not normally distributed (Sig. = 0.010). Therefore, the assumption of normality was not fully met, and a non-parametric statistical test was applied. The Mann–Whitney U Test revealed a statistically significant difference between the post-test scores of the two groups, with an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001 (< 0.05). Furthermore, the mean rank of the experimental group (38.92) was higher than that of the control group (24.08), indicating better reading comprehension performance. These findings demonstrate that the use of Nearpod has a significant difference in improving students’ reading comprehension of Greeting Card Material by fostering active participation, multimodal learning, and interactive engagement.
