Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a difference in the learning outcomes of students taught using the Duolingo application compared to conventional methods. The method applied in this research is quantitative with a quasi-experimental design, involving seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Solok in the 2025/2026 school year. The sample was taken using the cluster random sampling technique, where class VII.9 was designated as the experimental class and class VII.7 as the control class, with a total of 64 students. The result of the analysis shows that the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) is 0.043, which is smaller than 0.05, indicating a significant difference in students’ grammar ability between two groups. The mean difference of 1.406 indicated that the use of the Duolingo app positively contributed to the improvement of students’ grammar skills. The conclusion of this study is that the use of the Duolingo application significantly increases students’ grammar ability at the junior high school level. This study recommends that the Duolingo app be used as an additional tool in English language learning, particularly in grammar teaching, given the significant effect it shows on students’ learning outcomes.
