Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the jigsaw technique in speaking at class IX MTsN 3 Pariaman. This study uses experimental research that uses two classes consisting of one control class and one experiment class. The population of this study was all students in class IX at MTsN 3 Pariaman. The total sample is 52 students, 20 students from class IX.2 and 32 students from IX.6. In collecting data, the researcher used a speaking test. A pre-test was given to experiment and control class before treatment to obtain their pre-test scores from both. The treatment given was teaching using the jigsaw technique in experiment class. At the end of the treatment, students were given the post-test. Both tests were analyzed by using assessment rubrics (Arthur Hughes 2002, p. 131), which include accent, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. From the finding of the data analyzed, it was found that the mean score for the post-test experimental class is 74.13 and the mean score for the post- test control class is 59.8. The result of the t-test was found that (2-tailed) less than 005. It explains that Ha is accepted and Hnull is rejected. It can be concluded that jigsaw has an influence or is effective in improving speaking skills.
