Abstract

This research aims to determine the factors of speaking difficulties that are most often faced by students in class XI MAN 1 Padangsidimpuan and the causes of students' difficulties in speaking English. This research was conducted at MAN 1 Padangsidimpuan. This research design uses a qualitative method. The subjects of this research were students of class XI science 1 MAN 1 Padangsidimpuan. This research data was collected using test, interviews and observation. From the findings and discussion, researchers discovered the factors of speaking difficulties most often faced by class XI science students and the causes students' difficulties in speaking English. Linguistic difficulties that students face when speaking English are lack of pronunciation, lack of vocabulary, lack of grammar. The non-linguistic problems students face when speaking English are they are afraid of making mistakes, embarrassed, anxious, lack of confidence and lack of motivation. Of the difficulties, the dominant difficulty is the lack of vocabulary. Most students stated that they were not confident because they did not have a large vocabulary to speak English well. The dominant factors that influence students' difficulties are lack of self-confidence and fear of making mistakes.
