Abstract

This study aims to determine analysis of students' difficulties in speaking english in grade eight of state Islamic Junior High School 1 Pesisir Selatan and the cause students' difficulties in speaking. This research was conducted at MTsN 1 Pesisir Selatan. The design of this study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII MTsN 1 Pesisir Selatan. The research data was collected using tests and interviews. From the findings and discussion, the researcher found the most common types of speaking difficulties faced by class VIII students of MTs Negeri 1 Pesisir Selatan and the factors that most affected students' difficulties in speaking. The linguistic problems that students face when speaking English are lack of pronunciation, lack of vocabulary, and lack of grammar. The personality difficult faced by students when speaking English, they lack confidence, are shy, and nervous. Of the difficulties, the dominant difficulty is pronunciation. Most of the students stated that they were afraid of making mistakes when pronouncing English words. The factor that affects student difficulty is the fear of making mistakes.
