Abstract

The problems of this research were; the first when the students perform their speaking text in front of the class room, the students are inclined to be quite and the students were just smile, the second problem was some students have difficulties in expressing their ideas orally, the third problem was their are nerveous to express their ideas in English. The purpose of this research were; to describe students’ speaking performance and to find out the dominant factor affecting students’ speaking performance at class VIII of state Islamic Junior High School 2 West Pasaman. This was descriptive research type. There were thirty students of class eight was choosen by using random sampling technique as respondents of this research. speaking performance test and quistionnaire were given to respondents as techniques to collect the data. Descriptive research type was proposed by Arikunto (2006:120) and SPSS were used to analyse the data. The result of students’ speaking performance was low, the averange of students’ score for each aspect was 1,20. There were introduction was 1,03, thesis statement was 1,5, connection to audience was 1,06, subject knowledge was 1,4, organization was 1,33, eye contact was 1,03, gesture and movement was 1, voice was 1,4, and fluency was 1,06. On the contrary, the lowest score was gesture and movement, it was 1%. It means that gesture and movement was the aspects of speaking performance hasn’t been mastered mostly by the students. Based on the result of questionnaires the affective factor was dominant factor that effect students speaking performance, it was 57,4%. It be concluded that the students’ speaking performance at class eight of State Islamic Junior High School 2 West Pasaman was low, the researcher Suggested to English teacher to improve the students speaking performance by knowing factors affecting student’s speaking.
