Abstract
English is a language that has a role as a universal language throughout the world. English is taught in Indonesia as a compulsory subject starting from junior high school to high school level. English teachers not only have to understand the material to be taught, but also must be able to convey learning material with appropriate learning techniques and media to students. Therefore, this study aims to examine the teaching techniques and learning media used by English teachers in teaching English. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The number of participants studied consisted of one English teacher teaching eighth grade at SMP Adabiah Padang. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and interviews with English teachers and grade 8 students. The researcher conducted the research nine times in three different grades of 8, three times for class VIII-1, three times for class VIII-2 and three times for class VIII-3. Based on the results of the research conducted, English teachers use setting, content explanation, reading aloud, checking, question-answer display, translation, dictation and copying included in the Control Technique. The techniques included in Semi Controlled and Free technique did not apply by the teacher in the classroom. While the learning media used by English teachers in the form of whiteboard is included in visuals that are not projected. Furthermore, teachers do not use textbooks and include dictionaries in printed media. The results of interviews with students stated that the teaching techniques and learning media used were unattractive and not in accordance with the material being taught. In addition, the interaction between the teacher and students in the class is not active during English lessons. Researchers suggest the English teachers to improve teaching techniques and learning media used to teach English.
