Abstract
This research aims to determine whether the Chain Drill Technique effectively improves the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Pasaman. This type of research is pre-experimental research. The population of this study were all students in class VIII at SMP Negeri 1 Pasaman for the 2023/2024 academic year, consisting of 293 students and divided into 9 classes. Then the researcher took sample using cluster sampling. The result was that class VIII.7 was a pre-experimental class consisting of 32 students. In collecting data, researchers used a speaking test. A pre-test is given before treatment to describe their pre-test score. The treatment given was teaching using the Chain Drill technique which was carried out over four meetings to see differences in the use of learning actions. At the end of the treatment, students were given a Post-Test. Both tests are analyzed using an assessment rubric ( Arthur Hughes 2002, p. 131 ) which includes Accent, Grammar, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension. The research results showed that the students' average post-test score (62,84) was higher than the pre-test (52,13). This shows that the Chain Drill technique has a significant influence on students' speaking abilities. Apart from that, the t- count (-11,631) is also greater than the t-table (2,039). It can be concluded that the t-count value in this research is higher than the t-table value. It can be concluded that there is significant effectiv in using the Chain Drill Technique on the speaking skills of students in the eighth grade at SMPN 1 Pasaman.
