Abstract

Many students have difficulty in speaking English such as feel afraid and nervous when they want to speak or communicate using English in front of their classmates, this study aims to find an effect of storytelling techniques on students' speaking skill at VII grade of SMPN 31 Padang. This research is a quantitative research with quasi-experimental research methods. The population of this study is all students of the VII grade at SMPN 31 Padang in academic year 2022/2023. The researcher selected two classes as the samples. They are VII-F with 33 students as experimental class and VII-B with 33 students as control class. To collect the data, the researcher used a test as the instrument of post-test. The data analysis technique used was the t-test with a significance level of 5%. Prior to data analysis, prerequisite analysis tests were carried out in the form of normality tests and homogeneity tests. The test was carried out with the help of the SPSS 26 computer program which showed that the posttest data were normally distributed and homogeneous. The result of this research is the post-test score show that there is a significance differences between two classes. For the experimental class, got 78.72 and for the control class got 70.76. Analysis of the t-test data for the posttest experimental group and the control group, obtained a t-value of 5.520 and a ρ of 0.000 (ρ < 0.05). The average gain score is only 7.96. It means that in the post-test session, the experimental class got a higher score than the control class. The post-test was done after the students in each class got the treatment from the researcher, the experimental class used researcher technique which was storytelling and the control class used conventional technique. It can be concluded that storytelling technique is effected students’ speaking skill.
