Abstract

Textbooks are known as one of the resources commonly used in the teaching and learning process because they contain collections of information about knowledge and skills as students’ learning guides in the form of activities. This research aims to find out whether the English textbook entitled “Work in Progress” for the tenth grade of senior high school has met the criteria of good textbooks suggested by Cunningsworth’s theory. There are eight criteria: 1) Aims and Approaches, 2) Design and Organization, 3) Language Content, 4) Skill, 5) Topic, 6) Methodology, 7) Teachers’ Book, 8) Practical Consideration. The researcher used a qualitative research method by using content analysis. The result of this research showed that this book was almost in accordance with the criteria of a good book as defined by Cunningsworth (1995). The criteria that do not meet, among others, the design and organization criteria are that the textbook does not tell how the assessment will take place during the learning process, and recycling and revision of the activities. On the language content criterion, the textbook does not provide pronunciation exercises, how to write sentences at a high level, and does not provide how to write formal and informal styles. On the methodology criterion, the textbooks do not provide suggestions and help for learning skills and learning strategies. The last criterion that was not met was the teacher’s book, namely that the teacher’s book does not provide conclusions on each material. It is highly expected for teachers to fill in these deficiencies so that textbooks can be used effectively and efficiently.
