Abstract
This research aimed to determine whether the use of the ‘show-and-tell’ technique is positively effective after being taught to one group of first-grade students at SMPN 3 Tualang. The research question was: Is the "Show and Tell" technique effective in teaching speaking to seventh-grade students of SMPN 3 Tualang? The pre-experimental design was employed using a speaking test as the instrument. The sample of this research was VII-3 chosen by using purposive sampling. The data were analyzed by calculating the normality test, homogeneity test, and paired sample T-test to compare the data from the pre-test and post-test scores. After analyzing the student's speaking test, the data revealed that the student's participation and speaking skills had improved. It can be seen how they presented their description of something in front of the class and how they interacted well with their classmates during the speaking class. The data calculated with SPSS version 25 indicated a pre-test score of 60.64, which was followed by an increase in the post-test score to 72.32. The paired sample t-test showed that the significant value 0,000<0,05 and Tcount was higher than Ttable (12,295>2.063). In conclusion, the Show-and-Tell technique significantly affected students' speaking abilities. The show-and-tell technique improved aspects of speaking such as Grammar, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Fluency, and Pronunciation, and increased students' participation in the classroom, resulting in increased interest and confidence in speaking English in front of the class.
