Abstract

This research aims to Analyze Classroom Interaction in English as a Foreign Language Learning (A Case Study of Raising Language Awareness at Grade 8th of State Junior High School 1 Padang Panjang). There are three problem formulations in this study, namely 1). To describe how do the teacher and students conduct interaction in the English learning process of Grade 8th of Junior High School 1 Padang Panjang. 2). To determine the extent to which the English teacher raise students’ language awareness at Grade 8th of Junior High School 1 Padang Panjang in her teaching. 3). To describe and analyze teacher’s competence in collaborating the teaching materials with the local wisdom as to improve students’ critical thinking skills at grade 8th of Junior High School 1 Padang Panjang. This research was a case study qualitative research.Data were collected through classroom observation, document analysis and interview with English teacher. To answer the first question, data were obtained through observation in three meetings (video recording). Analyzed using the foreign language interaction analysis system (FLINT) and it was found that teacher and student conduct the interaction through the three ways of classroom interaction petterns, they are teacher speaking to the whole class, teacher speaking to an individual with the rest of the class as hearers and student speaking to the teacher. And it was found that 76.18% that the English teacher raise students’ language awareness. And to answer the third question, data was obtained through data was obtained through analysis of teacher lesson plan documents and interviews with English teachers who taught in class 8th at Junior High School 1 Padang Panjang and it was found how teachers collaborate teaching materials with local wisdom, namely: By selecting and adopting themes/materials that are in accordance with local potential and can be included in local wisdom, then by designing materials, and student activities in class so that it can improve students' critical thinking. The example is: culinary, handicraft products, arts, culture, customs, and tourist destinations and others at notice material, greeting cards, recount, procedure text, and others.
