Abstract

This study aims to figure whether there is a relationship between self-confidence and the speaking ability of class VIII students at MTsN 1 Pariaman. This research is a kind of correlation research. Sample was carried out in a random cluster from class VIII MTsN 1 Pariaman with a total of 32 students. The data was obtained by filling out a questionnaire and testing students' speaking ability. The results of this study indicate that there is no correlation between students' self-confidence and the speaking ability of class VIII MTsN 1 Pariaman. It is shown through the Pearson correlation method r, namely the correlation value = 0.161 which shows a very low correlation where the standard correlation is between 0.000-0.200. Judging from the interpretation table, it shows very low and the r-count is lower than the r-table. So, there is no relationship between students' self-confidence and their speaking skills in class VIII MTsN 1 Pariaman. This means that self-confidence at the MTs level is not a top priority in English lessons in the classroom.
