Abstract

ABSTRACT Elvi Rahmi, (2018): The Correlation beetwen Students’ Interest and Speaking Ability at X Grade 6 MAN Pasaman Barat Advisor : 1. Dr. Hadeli, M.A, M.Pd 2. Dra.Hj. Elismawati, M.Pd English is a language used in all aspects of communication, science, and technology. All of them can be actualized through speaking, beside other basic skill such as listening, reading, and writing. Many students do not realize the importance of speaking. Therefore, the teacher are hoped to make the students interested in speaking and motivate them to speak. The students, who are interested in speaking, enjoy their learning. They always feel happy and ready to do any task given by the teacher. in this research the researcher. As a result, they can get a good score in doing the tasks. The purpose of this research is to know whether is a significant correlation between students’ interest and speaking ability at class X of lslamic Senior High School 6 Pasaman Barat. The method used in this research was quantitave method and the technique used in this research is a correlational technique. The population of this research was all of the students at class X that consist of 52 students who were divided into two classes. Then, the researcher took both of them as the sample. Where class X MIPA that consists of 22 students and the researcher was took 15 students, and X SOS that consist of 30 students and was took 15 students, so the researcher was took 30 students as the sample and this sample was took with Random sampling. In collecting the data, researcher used speaking test, and distribute questionnaires. The questionnaires have six indicators they are attention, curiosity, enjoyment, teaching material, teachers’ attitute and participation.The test was given to both classes with the same topic. In analyzing the data, the questionnaires were assessed by Likert’s scale rating, and oral test was measured by Huges’s scale rating. The result of this reserach shows that there is a positive correlation between students’ interest and speaking ability. It is proved by the r_x (0,563) is bigger than r_t in the degree significance 5% (0,349) and 1% (0,449). it is considered that the null hypothesis (Ho) in this research is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which is states that there is correlation between students’ interest and speaking ability is accepted. In conclusion, there is positive correlation between students’ interest and speaking ability.
