ABSTRACT Romani, 1314050653.The Effect of Group Work Strategy Towards Students’ Speaking Ability at Class XI Senior High School 4 Pariaman The students at class XI Senior High School Pariaman have many problems in speaking English that make them embarrassed to used English language. In speaking activity, students feel shy and lazy to speak. All of these problems caused by students failed in learning speaking. The speaking ability comprising in this research based on the components stated by Hughes (1989, 111-113): 1) pronunciation, 2) grammar, 3) vocabulary, 4) fluency, and 5) comprehension. The objective of this research is to determine whether Group Work give significant effect on students’ speaking at class XI Senior High School Pariaman. This research was designed experimental research. The population of this research is students at class XI IPA that consist of fiveclasses and 149 students. The researcher used Cluster Random Sampling for getting the sample class.thus, there were two classes as sample, they are class XI IPA4 as experimental class consist of 20 students and XI IPA5as control class consist of 25 students. Total numbers of sample are 45 students. This research got the data with speaking test. Speaking test used to know students’ ability in speaking. The result of this research showed that in post-test researcher found that mean scores of experimental class (78.55) was higher than mean scores of control group (68.08). Therefore, t-calculated (14.34) was bigger than t-table (2.000). It means that the hypothesis was accepted. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that students’ ability in experimental class as good in pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. It proved that the students’ test scores of experimental class was higher than the students’ test scores of control class. Teaching speaking by using Group Work strategy gives significant effect toward students’ speaking ability. Therefore, it is hope that teacher or the next researcher who use this technique can apply the better activity and procedure so that the component of speaking can be developed. ABSTRAK Romani, 1314050653.The Effect of Group Work Strategy Towards Students’ Speaking Ability at Class XI Senior High School 4 Pariaman Peserta didik pada kelas XI di SMAN 4 Pariaman mempunyai banyak masalah dalam berbicara bahasa inggris yang membuat mereka malu menggunakan bahasa inggris. Didalam aktivitas pembelajaran speaking, siswa merasa malu dan malas untuk berbicara yang salah satuny adisebabkan oleh pemakaian teknik yang kurang tepat dan menarik bagi siswa yang mengakibatkan kegagalan dalam proses pembelajaran speaking. menurut Hughes komponen berbicara itu adalah pelafalan, stukture, kosakata, kelancaran, dan komprehensif. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengukur apakah strategi Group Work memberikan pengaruh yang berarti dalam kemampuan berbicara siswa dikelas XI SMAN 4 Pariaman. Penelitian ini dirancang sebagai penelitian eksperimen. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPA yang terdiri atas 5 kelas dengan total murid 149 siswa. Kemudian peneliti mendapatkan sampel dari penelitian ini dengan cara Cluster Random Sampling (sampel acak kelompok) sehingga didapatkan 2 kelas sebagai sampel, yaitu kelas XI IPA4 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan XI IPA5 sebagai kelas kontrol. Total keseluruhan sampel adalah 45 siswa. Penelitian ini memperoleh data melalui speaking test. Speaking test digunakan untuk mengetahui kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa, nilai rata-rata kelompok eksperimen pada hasil post-test (78.55) dan nilai rata-rata pada kelompok control (68.78) ini berarti kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dari kelas control. Sementara t-hitung (14.34) juga lebih besar dari t-table (2.000), itu berarti bahwa hipotesis dapat diterima. Berdasarkan penelitian disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan siswa pada kelompok eskperimen dalam speaking lebih baik yaitu dalam mengungkapkan pelafalan, structure, kosakata, kelancaran dan komprehensif. Itu dapat dibuktikan dengan tes skore dari kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dari tes skore kelas kontrol. Mengajar dengan menggunakan teknik Group Work member pengaruh terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa. Oleh sebab itu, diharapkan guru atau peneliti selanjutnya yang menggunakan teknik ini agar dapa tmengaplikasikan aktifitas dan prosedur yang lebih baik sehingga komponen berbicara dapat dikembangkan.
