Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy had a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension at SMP N 1 2×11 Enam Lingkung. This study used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design. The sample consisted of 31 eighth-grade students who were selected using cluster random sampling. The data were collected through reading comprehension tests administered before and after the treatment. The treatment was conducted using the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy, which involved four main activities: predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test because the data did not fully meet the assumption of normality. The results showed that the students’ mean score increased from 51.13 in the pre-test to 74.84 in the post-test. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test showed a significance value of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy had a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension. The strategy helped students become more active in understanding texts through predicting, questioning, clarifying difficult information, and summarizing the main points.
