Abstract

Cattle farming is an important sector for the local economy, particularly in Payakumbuh, which has a cattle population of 2,947 head. However, farmers' limited knowledge in recognizing early disease symptoms often leads to delayed reporting and treatment, resulting in reduced productivity and, in some cases, livestock mortality. This study aims to design and implement a web-based expert system that helps farmers perform early detection of cattle disease based on observed symptoms, by applying the forward chaining and certainty factor methods. The forward chaining method is used to trace the correspondence between symptoms and rules within a knowledge base consisting of 38 disease and health-disorder types across five categories, namely Digestive, Skin, Reproductive, Respiratory, and Other, while the certainty factor method is used to calculate the confidence level of the diagnosis result. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with a Waterfall system-development model. System testing was carried out through Black Box Testing and accuracy testing using a Confusion Matrix on 10 test cases. The test results show that all diagnoses produced by the system matched the expert's diagnoses, with an accuracy rate of 100% with an accuracy rate of 100% across 10 test cases. These results indicate that the developed expert system can serve as a supporting tool for farmers to perform an initial diagnosis of cattle disease independently before obtaining further treatment from a veterinarian.
