Abstract

The growing use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in higher education has introduced new possibilities for supporting academic work while simultaneously raising concerns about academic integrity. In Indonesia, the adoption of GenAI among university students has increased rapidly, particularly in science and technology-based institutions where familiarity with information technology tends to be high. Rather than viewing GenAI use as simply beneficial or problematic, this study explores how students navigate its use within the realities of their academic environment. Specifically, it examines the various forms of academic pressure and opportunity that students encounter, how they interpret these factors, and how the interaction between the two shapes variation in GenAI usage practices in their daily academic activities. This research employs a qualitative exploratory approach involving 12 students from the Faculty of Science and Technology at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, selected through purposive sampling, with data collected via in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings suggest that students from different fields of study interpret academic pressure and opportunity differently, resulting in diverse ways of integrating GenAI into their academic practices. Notably, similar pressures and opportunities are not perceived uniformly across students, and it is precisely these differences in interpretation that ultimately determine how GenAI is used. These findings highlight that students' engagement with GenAI is not merely a response to technological availability, but is deeply tied to how they make sense of the academic situations they face, with important implications for the development of GenAI usage policies in higher education.
