Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the teaching strategies used by an English teacher at SMP Negeri 3 Padang Panjang, particularly in teaching the topic of greeting cards. The main objective of this research is to identify the strategies implemented in the classroom and to determine the most dominant strategy used. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The subject of the study is an English teacher of the eighth grade. Data were collected through classroom observation, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using the techniques of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the teacher applied five teaching strategies, namely lecture/presentation, demonstration, case-based small group discussion, role play or student presentation, and games as ice breaking activities. Among these strategies, lecture/presentation and demonstration were the most dominant, as they were more effective in providing structured understanding and concrete examples for the students. This study suggests that teachers should continue to innovate in selecting teaching strategies that meet students’ needs, as well as combine conventional methods with more varied approaches so that the learning process becomes more engaging and student learning outcomes can be further optimized.
