Abstract
This research was motivated by the teacher innovating in speaking learning by using dialogue technique. This study aims to determine teacher innovations in teaching speaking, especially related to dialogue techniques for grade VII students and to determine student responses to dialogue techniques used by teachers when teaching speaking at Islamic Junior High School 3 Padang Pariaman. This study uses qualitative and quantitative research methods (mixed methods). Data collection techniques include classroom observation, interviews with English teachers, and questionnaires distributed to students. The observation results showed that teachers innovated by integrating visual media, increasing sentence complexity, providing real-life contexts, and providing creative freedom for students in dialogue activities. In addition, teachers adjusted the dialogue structure according to students' diverse abilities and provided explicit feedback to improve their speaking skills. The interview results confirmed the innovation, especially in the use of simplification of dialogues, adjusting dialogue to students' need and capacity, explicit of sentence patterns in dialogue, and giving meaningful feedback. Furthermore, quantitative findings from the questionnaire regarding student responses showed that most students gave positive responses to the dialogue technique, especially in the aspect of group cooperation with the highest score of 142, a percentage of 97.93%, and an average score of 4.89. This shows that innovation in dialogue techniques contributes to improving students' motivation and speaking skills. This study concludes that teacher innovation in dialogue techniques plays an important role and contributes to improving students' speaking skills and recommends that teaching practices be further improved and adjusted to students' learning needs. Based on the findings in this study, it is recommended that teachers continue to develop and refine dialogue technique by integrating elements to improve students' speaking skills effectively.
