Abstract

ABSTRACT Nidya Adha, 2018. The Effect of Chain Drill Technique on Students’ Speaking Ability in Descriptive Text at Class VIII of Islamic Junior High School 1 Padang. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of students’ speaking ability between those taught by using Chain Drill Technique and those who are taught without using Chain Drill Technique at class VIII of Islamic Junior High School 1 Padang. This research was experimental research. The population of this study was all of the students at class VIII of Islamic Junior High School 1 Padang that consist of 316 students were divided into 11 classes. The sample was chosen by using random sampling. The result was class VIII10 as experimental class that consist of 27 students and VIII9 as control class that consist of 27 students. In collecting the data, researcher used speaking test. The test was given to both classes with the same topic. Then, post-test was given after applying the treatments for five meetings to determine the effect of using Chain Drill Technique. The result of this research showed that the mean score of students’ speaking ability in experimental class (68) was higher than the mean score of students’ speaking ability in control class (58,22). While, t-observed (3,2709) was also bigger than t-table (1.67496). Moreover, each components of speaking both of classes are different. It can be seen from the comparison of students’ mean scores of post-test. Statistically, it is showed that teaching speaking by using Chain Drill Technique gives significant effect on students’ speaking ability. It can be concluded that Chain Drill Technique improves the students’ speaking ability especially in considering five components of speaking. So, it is recommended for English teacher and should consider the use of Chain Drill Technique as an alternative technique in teaching speaking.
