Abstract

ABSTRACT YosiGinestia, 2018 : The Effect of Talk Show Strategy Toward Students’ Speaking Skill at Class X of Senior High School 6 Pariaman This study was based on the facts a that most students at Class X of Senior High School 6 Pariaman had some problems in speaking.Their difficulties that the students’ face in speaking was caused by some factors came from themselves and also inappropriate strategy that used by English teacher. So that, the researcher used Talk Show Strategy to solve the students’ problems in speaking. Talk Show Strategy helped students to increase students’ vocabulary and comprehension. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is any significant difference on students’ speaking skill between the students’ who are taugh by using Talk Show Strategy and those who are taugh without using Talk Show Strategy at class X of Senoir High School 6 Pariaman. The design of the research was experimental research. The population was class X in 2017/2018 academic year. Students who were taught by the same teacher and consists of 91 students contributed into four classes. The sample consists of 44 students contribute into two classes were chosen through cluster random sampling. The two classes were decided to be class experiment (X1/ 22 students) and class control (X2/ 22 students). The experiment class was taught by Talk Show Strategy, while control class was taught by using conventional technique. Both classes were taught by the same materials and teacher. The data of this research were collected by using speaking test. The test was given to both classes before doing the treatment (pre-test) to identify the students’ basic speaking skill. Then, post-test was given to find out the effectiveness of Talk ShowStrategy on students’speaking skill. The result of this research shows that the mean score of pre-test of experimental class was 43.1818 with 14.1510 standard deviation while the control class was 39.6364 with 13.3258 standard deviation. After doing treatment in several times, both classes were given post-test. The mean score of post test of experimental class was74.5945 with90.8938 standard deviation while control class was 66.8545 with10.7035 standard deviation. The data of this research were analyzed by using the formula t-test. From the calculation of the result of the test, it was indicated that t-calculated was 57.81 and t-table1.68195with a= 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) 42. So that t-calculated was greater than t-table (57.81>1.68195). It means that Talk Show Strategy gave significant effect on students’speaking skill especially invocabulary and comprehention component. It is concluded that Talk Show strategy can improve students’ speaking skill especially vocabulary and comprehension at class X of Senior High School 6 Pariaman. It is recommended that, the English teacher should determine the use of Talk Show strategy in teaching speaking. Then, for other researcher, it is suggested to carry out further studies about the use of Talk Show strategy in developing students’ speaking skill.
