Abstract

Writing is one of skills in English that should be mastered by the students. In mastering writing teachers need strategy to guide the students to write well and effectively but students got difficulties in expressing their ideas, they did not know how to start their writing, thenthey were also still confused to develop their vocabularies and organize their ideas by considering the five components of writing skill. Therefore, to improve quality of the students writing ability, it is needed an appropriate strategy to make learning more effective. One of the strategies was Think-Pair-Share (TPS) strategy for experimental class. The purpose of this research was to know whether there was any significant effect on students’ writing ability, they should master in component of writing skill like content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic. They were the students who were taught by using Think-Pair-Share (TPS)strategy and who were taught by conventional Strategy at Grade X of MAN 2 Pesisir Selatan. The population of this research was all of the students at class X IPA of MAN 2 Pesisir Selatan that consist of 91 students who were divided into there classes. Then, the researcher took class X IPA 1 and X IPA as the sample that was chosen through cluster random sampling. Where class X IPA 2 as the experimental class consist of 29 students and class X IPA 2 1 as control class consists of 30 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used written test only. The test was given to both classes with the same topic. Then, post-test was given after doing the treatments for six meetings to know the effect of Think-Pair-Share (TPS) Strategy. The data was analyzed by using statistical procedures. T- was used to analyze the students’ post-test scores. The result of t-test (t ) was compared with t table calculate at degree of freedom 57 and the level of significant 5% (0.05). The result of this research showed that mean scores of students’ writing in experiment class (76,86) was higher than the mean scores of students’ writing in control class (71,86). It meant that teaching writing by using Think-Pair-Share (TPS) Strategy gave significant effect on students’ writing skill. While, t (6.99) was also bigger than t table calculated (1.67). Moreover, each components of writing both of classes are also different. It can be seen from the comparison of students’ mean scores of post-test. It meant that hypothesis was accepted. In short, it can be concluded that teaching writing by using Think-PairShare (TPS)Strategy gave significant effect toward students’ writing skill at Grade X of MAN 2 Pesisir Selatan. So, it is recommended for English teacher toconsider the use Think- Pair-Share (TPS) strategy as a strategy in teaching writing for getting significant effect on students’ writing skill.
