Abstract

Writing is one of skills in English that should be mastered by the students. Teachers need technique to guide the students to write well in mastering writing but students got difficulties in writing, like diffficult in expressing their ideas, lack of vocabulary and error in grammar. Therefore, it was needed an appropriate technique to make learning more effective to improve quality of the students‘ writing skill. One of techniques was Clustering Technique for experimental class. The purpose of this research was to know whether the students’ achievement in writing skill who are taught by clustering technique are higher than who are taught by conventional technique at State Junior High School 5 Payakumbuh. This Research was an experimental research type. Posttest experiment and control group were used to analyze the data. The population of this research was all of the students for grade eight of State Junior High School 5 Payakumbuh that consists of 127 students divided into six classes. Two classes were taken as sample of the research by using cluster random sampling. The sample classes were taken by giving the lottery. The result shown that VIII 4 as an experimental class consists of 20 students, and VIII 1 as a control class consists of 20 students. Writing test was used to collect the data. The treatment was done for six meetings. The data of this research was analyzed by using Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS)-20 Program. The result of this research revealed that the mean score of students’ posttest at experimental class (81.5) was higher than the mean score of students’ posttest at control class (62.2). The result calculation of the test shown that t- calculate (6.78) was higher than t- (1.306) with α = 0.05. The hypothesis was accepted. It meant that clustering technique gave significant difference towards students’ writing skill. The components of writing were also affected. table It was concluded that teaching writing by using clustering technique gave significant difference on students’ writing skill at grade eight of State Junior High School 5 Payakumbuh So this technique can be recommended as a technique to improve student’s writing skill.
