Abstract

Lolya Sari, 2019 : The Effect of Group Investigation Technique towards Students’ Speaking Ability in Narrative Text at Grade X of Islamic Senior High School 1 Pesisir Selatan The inapropriate technique of teacher in teaching-learning made the students less practice in speaking. The students got difficulties to start speaking and do it into a good one in oral activity, they lack of knowledge in term of grammar, pronounciation, fluency, comprehension and less of vocabulary. Therefore, to improve the students’ speaking ability, it needs an appropriate technique to make learning more effectively. One of the technique was Group Investigation technique for experimental class with small groups that focused on the learning topic that be discussed in every meeting by the researcher. By using language target, the researcher as a teacher and observer was monitor every action and students activities in their group. By using the stages in Group Investigation technique, the students investigated the topic that was narrative text. The stages consist of identifying the topic, planning their learning task, do the investigation, reporting and presentation, and the last one is give evaluation and feedback with other students and teacher. The purpose of this research was to know whether there was different result between students’ speaking ability by using Group Investigation technique and without using that technique at grade X students’ of Islamic Senior High School 1 Pesisir Selatan. This research was an experimental research which was conducted at Islamic Senior High School 1 Pesisir Selatan. The population of this research was all of first year students (124 students) spreading in five classes. Then, by using cluster random sampling the researcher took class X IPK as the experimental class that consist of 25 students and class X IPA1 as control class that consists of 24 students. In collecting the data, researcher used speaking test. The test was given to both classes with the same topic. Then, post-test was given after doing treatments for six meetings to know the effect of Group Investigation technique towards students’ speaking ability in narrative text. The result of study showed that mean score of students’ post-test in experimental class (68.72) was higher than the mean score of students’ post-test in control class (60.79). While tcalculate (44.65) was also higher than ttable (1 67793) with the level of significant 5% (0,05). It means that, the hypothesis was accepted. The students enjoyed and interested in learning speaking throughGroup Investigation technique. Statistically, it was showed that teaching speaking by using Group Investigation technique gave significant effect towards’ students’ speaking ability at X Grade of Islamic Senior High School 1 Pesisir Selatan. So, it recommended for English teacher should consider the use of Group Investigation technique as a technique in teaching speaking for giving significant effect on students’ speaking ability. keywords : grouup investigation technique, speaking, narrative text
