Abstract

The students at class IX of SMPN 1 Gunung Talang had weakness in writing procedure text. Most of them had low achievement in writing procedure text because the students have lack of vocabulary, so it is difficult for them to write good procedure text. Procedure text is one of type of genre which should be mastered by the students at class IX of SMPN 1 Gunung Talang in Academic Year 2019/2020 on writing skill. The purpose of this research was to find out the most problem in components of writing skill in Procedure text and to find out the students components of writing skill that have been mastered. The population of this research was the class IX students of SMPN 1 Gunung Talang in academic year 2019/2020. And there is 21 students of class IX.1 at SMPN 1 Gunung Talang as sample of the research. This research methodology used in this research was descriptive research. The instrument of this research was writing test. The result of writing test had been analyzed or assessed by Jacob theory. The result of students’ writing test showed that there are three aspects of the most problems that students faced in writing procedure text, such as; vocabulary, language use and mechanics. The result of the research it was found that the mean score of students based on components of writing in procedure text was 64.80. The score indicates that students’ achievements were under Minimum Achievement Criteria (MAC) which is determined by the school is 78. The result of this research showed that the mean score of students’ writing skill in each component were content was 21.67(10%), organization was 13.28(52%), vocabulary was 12.61(80%), language use was 14.34(76%), and mechanics was 2.42(95%). Based on the finding of this research, it was concluded that the most problem in components of writing skill in procedure text at class IX.1 of SMPN 1 Gunung Talang were; vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The students’ components of writing mastery based on the result of writing test were; content and organization. Key words: Analysis, Writing skill, Procedure text
