Abstract

ABSTRACT Darmayenti and Nofel Nofiadri (2014): Model of Development Teacher’s English Competence at State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Imam Bonjol Padang. This study aimed to design a model of teachers’ English competence at State Institute for Islamic Studies of Imam Bonjol Padang. The designing of the model was based on the fact that most of lecturers have lack of competence in English particularly on speaking and writing. However, the lecturers need to develop their competence in English in order to prepare themselves to add new information of lecturing materials and writing papers. Research and development (R&D) type was used to design model. There were 30 active lecturers chosen randomly to be sample of the research. During the process of the research, observation, questionnaire, and TOEFL test were used to collect the data. The result of the research can be described that lecturers' score on speaking and writing were low. The mean score was 55. They tend to develop their competences through looking up dictionary while they were reading. The mean score was 3.25. They need intensive course model to develop their competences on speaking and writing with the mean score was 74%. Designing of hypothetic model for developing lecturers’ competence in English had three main phases, namely analyzing the lecturers’ need on developing English competence, analyzing input for preparing the course, and analyzing process. The design model of teachers’ competence on English was supported positively by the members of Focus Group Discussion. They agreed that lecturers’ English competence was developed.
