Abstract
This study aims to identify the distribution of the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and types of HOTS questions that are most frequently used in the reading exercises in the English for Nusantara textbook for the eighth grade of Junior High School based on the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. The type of the research is content analysis. The data source is the English for Nusantara textbook for The Eighth Grade of Junior High School. Data of this research is all of the open ended reading exercises in the textbooks. In conducting the research, the researcher used data collection techniques in the form of documentation. The data was analyzed using the interactive model offered by Miles and Huberman, which involves data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. To determine the validity of the data, the researcher used expert judgment. The result shows that the distribution of LOTS for cognitive domain obtains 65 out of 84 item and the distribution of HOTS obtains 19 out of 84 items. Of the total 19 HOTS questions, analyzing skill obtains 12 questions (14.3%), evaluating skill obtains 5 questions (5.9%), and creating skill obtains 2 questions (2.4%). While the distribution of LOTS for knowledge domain obtains 50 out of 84 items and the distribution of HOTS obtains 34 out of 84 items. Of the total 34 HOTS questions, conceptual knowledge obtains 24 questions (28.6%), procedural knowledge obtains 7 questions (8.3%%), and metacognitive knowledge obtains 3 questions (3.6%). Thus, the types of HOTS questions are most frequently used in cognitive domain is analyzing skill and for the knowledge domain is conceptual knowledge. Thus, it can be concluded that the reading exercises in the English for Nusantara textbook for The Eighth Grade of Junior High School lack of Higher Order Thinking Skills and dominated by lower order thinking skills.
