Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the guided conversation method can provide a significant effect on students' speaking skills. The type of research used in this study is quantitative pre-experiment. The population of this study was 32 students of class 8B, the treatment given was by explaining Guided Conversation and its steps. The treatment was carried out for six meetings. At the first meeting, students were given an initial test before the treatment was given. At the sixth meeting, students were given a Post-Test. Both tests were analyzed using a Hughes assessment rubric which includes Accent, Grammar, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25, the results of the study showed that the Pre-Test (65.50) while the Post Test (80.28) showed that the post test score was higher & increased compared to the pre-test score. Significantly affects students' speaking skills. The significance value of the 2-tailed independent sample test is 0.000 <0.05. Thus, it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. It can be concluded that the guided conversation method has a significant influence on the speaking skills of class VIII students of SMPN 2 Padang Panjang.
