Abstract
The study was carried out to obtain the empirical data of the effectiveness of role play technique on students’ speaking skill at seventh grade of MTsN 3 Lima Puluh Kota. The study was conducted on two separated groups which were experimental class and control class, with a quasi-experimental design. The participants of the study were 58 students. The study was administered in six meetings, the first meeting for pre-test, four meetings for treatments, and the last meeting for post-test. Over the four treatments, both classes were learning English with the same learning content; however only experimental class was taught using role playing technique, while the control class was listening to explanation from teacher and doing exercise. T-test was used as the primary method in analyzing the result, while observation and interview were included to gather further information on students’ achievement before doing the experiment. The mean score of experimental class was 82.45 while the control class was 69.59. The result from t-test was that the value of t table in degree significance 0.05% and df = 28 was (-1.701) and the value of t observation was (-6.789). This meant that Ha which was “there is significant effect of role playing on students’ speaking ability” was accepted. Additionally, the effect size was strong since d=1.22. Therefore, it could be concluded that role play technique had significant effect in strong level on students speaking ability and the most prominent factor contributing the result was that students enjoyed and effectively appropriate in engaging students‟ participation in learning activities.
