Abstract

The purpose of this research was carried out to find the effectiveness of role play in teaching speaking for class XI at Islamic Senior High School 2 Padang. Whether there is significance different in speaking ability of the students who are using a role play and those who are not using role play. The sample in this study consisted of 65 people. Researchers divided two classes into experimental class and control class. The research was conducted in 6 meetings. At the first meeting the researcher conducted a pre-test in both classes. At the second to fifth meeting the researcher provided treatment in the experimental class and conventional learning in the control class. At the sixth meeting the researcher gave a post-test to both classes. Researchers used a quasi-experimental design. Data was collected by using a speaking test by Arthur Hughes which consists of five components, namely Pronunciation, Vocabulary, Grammar, Fluency, and Comprehension. Students' speaking abilities also improved on grammar and comprehension indicators. The research results show that the T-Test result is 2-tailed 0.000. From the research results, it was concluded that Role Play had a significant effect on the speaking ability of class XI students at MAN 2 Padang.
