Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the thinking criteria, cognitive levels, and the most frequently used question classifications in the reading task questions within the English textbook "Work In Progress" for the 10th-grade students at SMAN 16 Padang. The research method used was Descriptive. The data analysis techniques used in this research encompass data reduction, data display, the last step was conclusions drawing and verification. The results obtained from this research reveal that the most frequently used thinking criteria is HOTS, comprising 60 questions out of 112, followed by the most commonly used cognitive level in HOTS reading task questions being C4 (Analysis), totaling 42 questions out of 60. Therefore, it can be concluded that the English textbook "Work In Progress" aligns with the criteria of the curriculum for independent learning, as it encourages students to think critically.
