Abstract

ABSTRACT Yuyut Kemala Sari, 2018. The Effect Of Plus Minus and Interesting Strategy Toward Students’ Speaking Ability At Class X SMAN 1 VII Koto Sei. Sarik The purpose of this research is to determine whether thre is significant difference on students’ speaking ability between the students who are taught by using PMI Strategy and those who are taught without using Strategy (conventional strategy) at class X of SMAN 1 VII Koto Sungai Sarik Padang Pariaman. This research was based on students’ low mastery of five components of speaking. Students did not know how to start their speaking. They got difficulties in generating ideas and developing it into spoken form. Then, they also got difficulties in ordering the speak into comprehend. Beside that, they also had low mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. Consequently speaking was still hard activity for students. Therefore, it is needed an effort to make speaking to be not difficult activity anymore for students. One of the efforts is by applying an appropriate strategy that is PMI Strategy. The design of this research The design was an experimental research. The research was located at SMAN 1 VII Koto Sungai Sarik Kab Padang Pariaman. The population was 93 students distributed in four classes. Then, the researcher took class X MIPA2 and X MIPA4 as the sample. Where class X MIPA2 as the experiment class that consist of 24 students and X MIPA4 as control class that consist of 24 students. In collecting the data, researcher used speaking test. The test was given to both classes with the same topic. Then, post-test was given after doing treatments for five meetings to determine the effect of PMI Strategy. This research was analyzed by using SPSS procedures. T-test was used to analyze the students’ post-test score. The data was analyzed by using simple regression with 5% (0.05). The result of this research showed that mean scores of students’ speaking in experiment class (70.42) is higher than the mean score of students’ speaking in control class (59.58). While, t-calculate (3.235) is also bigger than t-table (1.683). Moreover, each components of speaking both of classes are different. It can be seen from the comparison of students’ mean scores of post-test. Statistically, it is showed that teaching speaking by using PMI Strategy gives significant difference on students’ speaking ability. It can be concluded that PMI Strategy improves the students’ speaking ability especially in considering five components of speaking.
