Abstract

“Students’ Difficulties in Reading Comprehension at Eighth Grade of Junior High School 4 Lubuk Sikaping” This study focused on the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension descriptive text and recount text at Junior High School 4 Lubuk Sikaping. The purposes of the study were to explain the difficulties aspect in reading comprehension on descriptive text and to explain the difficulties aspect in reading comprehension on recount text faced by the students at eighth grade of Junior High School 4 Lubuk Sikaping. The method applied was descriptive quantitative, where the questionnaire was used as the instrument data collection methods. The researcher used simple random sampling, take class VIII which 10 students from each class as sample. The result of data analysis was aimed to find out the reading comprehension difficulties faced by the students in comprehending descriptive text and recount text at the eighth grade of Junior High School 4 Lubuk Sikaping. The researcher was identified and was calculated the number of each difficulties of reading components of descriptive text and recount text. The researcher drew up the result of calculation into table and converting them into percentages. There were 6 components (language, topic and genre, comprehension tasks , negative expectation, vocabulary, and reading strategies) of questionnaire with 23 questions that was responded by 30 students. Based on the students’ responses in questionnaire with the six types of reading comprehension they got difficulty on descriptive text question is comprehension task and on recount text question is comprehension task. They are difficult to understand comprehension task in reading comprehension on descriptive text and recount text.
