Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills on English Exercises in Textbook “Passport to the World 1” for Seventh at Grade of Junior High School” This research is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to categorize the most dominant level of higher order thinking skills in learning in the hots feature development exercise used in each chapter in English textbooks. This study focuses on analyzing the exercises in developing the hots feature in each chapter of the English textbook entitled “Passport to the World 1” published by Tiga Serangkai. Data analysis used data analysis tables to categorize exercises based on higher order thinking skills. The results showed that there were 46 questions about the hots development feature in each chapter of the textbook. The most dominant level of higher-order thinking skills among the 46 superior questions developed in the textbook is the level of analyzing (C4) which includes 31 questions, evaluating (C5) as many as 7 questions, and creating (C6) as many as 8 questions. It can be concluded that the questions in the hots feature exercise developed in the English textbook “Passport to the World 1” are relevant to the HOTS in the cognitive dimension of Bloom's Taxonomy. However, there is an imbalance in the portion of questions between the levels of analyzing, evaluating, and creating in the HOTS practice feature. Therefore, teachers need to review good and appropriate exercises for students according to the competencies of the revised 2013 curriculum and teachers need to add questions from other sources. Helping students in demonstrating the ability to think logically, critically, creatively, and innovatively, as well as the ability to analyze and solve problems in everyday life.
